What impacts are related to "People" in eToolLCD?
-

I see people impacts can be associated with transport, construction, recurring and demolition, but how are they calculated and reported?
People impact is divided into:
– Transportation of staff to the construction site. Distance is default but can be adjusted depending on service provider location.
– Construction energy use by trade staff small or large equipment.
– Recurring (transportation and construction) depending on maintenance interval.People impact Life Cycle stage can be selected between:
– Cleaning Services – reported in B2
– Construction and Replacement – reported in A5 and B4
– Deconstruction – reported in C1
– Design and Professional Services
– Maintenance only – reported in B2People impact can be included in eToolLCD default scope but it’s optional in EN15978 and not included in Product Category Rules (PCR) – Buildings – Product Category Classification: UN CPC 531 2014:02 VERSION 2.0.
eToolLCD gives the users the ability to consider people impact because staff transport and recurring impacts can have a significant contribution over a project life cycle and should be minimised when possible.
Regarding transportation of staff to construction site, you say the distance is default, what is that default distance though ? Is it established as an average for each city given their size or is it the same no matter what the project is ?
Still regarding that transportation of staff, how is it calculated ? Say we have 1000 hours of Trade Staff (Small electrical equipment) in people section, does it consider like 8 hours a day and thus 1000/8=125days of work so 250 trips from service provider to construction site ? Or does it consider that those 1000 hours are allocated between several workers, decreasing the amount of trips ?Hi Laszlo,
The default is the same for each type of labour or equipment (no matter the city). If you want to customise it you can do so by entering the Suburb or Town of the Service Provider once an item is added to a design (or indeed in the template library).
I’m not sure how splitting the effort between several workers would decrease the number of trips (unless they live in the same house and car pool?). Let me know if I’ve misunderstood you there. The calculation does take into account the hours worked in a day and different types of labour or equipment have different set points. Very heavy equipment it would be assumed would stay onsite between days (eg pile drivers etc) whereas light equipment / or labour would be moved offsite every 4-8 hours of effort.
Hope that makes sense.

For clarity here are the default transport distances and modes for the trade staff / people in eToolLCD (NOTE THAT THIS LIST HAS BEEN UPDATED SINCE POSTING):

In many cases the trades don’t get to spend a full 8 hours on the site (in fact I think that’s often a rarity) so they would usually make more trips than one to complete 8 hours of work. They also often make trips during a day (or take a diversion on-route) to procure supplies. Trades often aren’t able to choose where they work, they will take the work even if it’s not local. So in some cases trades will be travelling these distances (or further) each trip.
For completeness on this topic here are the defaults for equipment. As Fei mentioned above you can change the location of the trades staff or equipment to get a more accurate distance assumption. We will likely enable creation of custom trade staff / equipment entries at some point in the future and/or editing the defaults in the designs themselves but for now hopefully this clarifies the defaults. Travel)’ under people? Would this be double counting the carbon if you did both?
I also still can’t find anything that confirms how you account for transporting off-site modular units from the factory to site. There’s no ‘equipment’ for lorry transport.
Hi Charlotte,
I’ll answer your second question first. You won’t be able to specify the transportation impacts for the building materials itself as the ‘Equipment’ category is mainly for the energy use & transport of larger equipment used for the construction process. The ‘People’ category is for impacts relating to assembly/construction impacts for the building (i.e. transport & energy use of people and smaller equipment/tools).
For the transport of the whole building unit (as a building material) to site, that would come under the material inputs itself.
In this example, I’m assuming a whole unit constructed out of SIPs which contains OSB board. You’d probably want to edit the transport to site distances to be the same for all the material inputs by changing it from ‘material default’ to manual input.
For prefabricated whole building units, I would recommend that you use the ‘Offsite manufacturing/prefabrication process’ to account for the equipment use of off-site manufacturing the unit.
With regards to your first question, I believe you have just uncovered a bug for us. Thanks for that. I have flagged this to our software team to look into it. Hopefully we’ll have an answer for you soon.

Hi there,
Has this bug been fixed? Please can you confirm whether it would be double counting to include both:
– Electrical Equipment, Small with transport and tradestaff, Electricity (under Equipment)
– Professional Labour, Electricity (under People)Thanks,
Ben
Hi Ben, you might find your answer under the ‘Technical Notes’ section of the support post that Rich has linked in the above comment.
