Customising Equipment

In a whole-life carbon assessment of a building, both people and equipment play significant roles in contributing to the overall carbon footprint. People and equipment impacts can be associated with transport, construction, recurring and demolition, but how are they calculated and reported in eTool? This article offers insights into this topic and provide a guide on creating custom people or equipment items in eTool.

Jump to the following sections in this post:

People and Equipment Category (Design or Template)

The ‘Equipment’ category is mainly for the energy use & transport of larger equipment used for the construction process. The ‘People’ category is for impacts relating to assembly/construction impacts for the building (i.e. transport & energy use of people and smaller equipment/tools).

People Category

You can add People inputs under the People category when you’re in a Design or creating a custom template.

Equipment Category

You can add Equipment inputs the same way whether you’re in a Design or custom template.

The People and Equipment impacts that are accounted for are:
– Transportation of staff/equipment to the construction site (transportation distance is set to regionalised defaults depending on service provider location but can be customised within a Design/Template)
– Construction energy use by trade staff/small or large equipment which is defined in the Equipment Library (covered in the rest of the post below)
– Recurring impacts for transportation and construction impacts depending on maintenance interval (input in Design/Template)

Customising People & Equipment Items

You can now access the People & Equipment items in the eTool Library. The Equipment Library offers users an opportunity to transparently compare equipment efficiencies as well as create custom People and Equipment items.

The emissions associated with a People/Equipment item should include equipment impact (energy use of equipment) and transport impact (transport of people/equipment to construction site). However, you can also create a People/Equipment item that contains either equipment impact only or transport of people/equipment only. Below is three examples of creating a custom People or Equipment item.

1) People/Equipment impact and transport impact

  • Step 1: Navigate to Equipment library and click on the green ‘+New Equipment’ button to create a new custom people/equipment item.

  • You can specify whether it is a People or Equipment item by selecting the relevant category under ‘Categorisation’.
  • Fill in the required information based on your specific project and click “Save”. This information can be edited later in the “Equipment Details” tab.

  • Step 2: Under the Equipment Impacts tab, select Energy Source or Process and enter the Consumption Rate. Click “+” to add equipment impact.

You can also add multi sources for an equipment item. For an equipment item that is using electricity, you can select default electricity grid so that when the equipment is added into the design, the software will automatically calculate the impact based on the grid selected at the Project level.

2) Transport of equipment only, no equipment impact

Similarly to create a People/Equipment item that has both Equipment impact and transport impact, you can create an item that includes Transport of equipment only, no equipment impact. Note that the equipment impact in this case will need to be adjusted to zero.

  • Step 1: Navigate to Equipment library to create New Equipment. Fill in the required information based on your specific project and click “Save”. This information can be edited later in the “Equipment Details” tab.
  • Step 2: Under the “Equipment Impacts” tab, add Energy Source or Process and leave the “Consumption Rate” as 0. Don’t forget to click “+” to add equipment impact.

You can check that the impact has been calculated correctly by adding the custom item into a design. In a test design below, the equipment item of “Compactor Roller – Vibratory, 25t, Diesel” of “External Works – 200mm Compacted Limestone (30 yrs)” template under “Equipment” category was chosen to be replaced with a new custom equipment item “Compactor Roller – Vibratory, 25t, Diesel, no equipment impact”. Note that the quantity should be kept the same.

The result can also be confirmed using the Analysis Tab.

3) Equipment impact only, no transport impact

Similarly to an equipment that has both Equipment impact and transport impact, you can create an item that includes Equipment impact only, no transport impact. Note that the transport impact in this case will need to be adjusted to zero.

  • Step 1: Navigate to Equipment library to create New Equipment. Fill in the required information based on your specific project and click “Save”. This information can be edited later in the “Equipment Details” tab.
  • Step 2: Under the Equipment Impacts tab, select Energy Source or Process and enter the Consumption Rate. Click “+” to add equipment impact.
  • Step 3: Under Equipment Details tab, adjust the “Default Transport Distance” and “Equipment Mass” to 0. Click “Save”

Similarly to the test example of Transport of equipment only, no equipment impact above, you can check that the impact has been calculated correctly by adding the custom item into a design and confirming by using the Analysis Tab.
